Discussion Questions: 
Give an example or two of anti-abolitionist violence in the 1830s. What is the significance of the both abolitionism and the backlash to ending slavery?
Provide specific examples from Douglass’s narrative that contradict Calhoun’s assertion the slavery is a “positive good.”
Describe Douglass’s final interactions with Mr. Covey. Why do you think I chose to end at this particular point in his narrative?
How does Calhoun justify slavery? How does this justification hide the reality of life for slaves?
Using the Foner text and/or Douglass’s narrative, give examples of different types of resistance to slavery.
