Character of Antigone
1. What is Antigone’s dilemma at the beginning of the play? What does she believe are her duties to her family and what are her duties to her city (the polis)?
2. A foil is a contrasting character who sets off or helps define another character. How is Ismene a foil for to Antigone? Discuss one character trait of both sisters. Use specific evidence from the play to support your response.
Character of Creon:
1. Re-read Creon’s Inaugural Speech to the Senators of the Chorus. What does Creon seem to be trying to accomplish in his first speech as the new king? How does Sophocles reveal the character of Creon throughout his opening speech. Use specific evidence from the play to support your response.
