Craft Essay II
“What Lips My Lips Have Kissed, and Where, and Why”
Edna St. Vincent Millay
What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning: but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Upon the glass and listen or reply,
And in my heart there sits a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands the lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet knows its boughs more silent than before:
I cannot say what loves have come and gone,
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.
Follow this plan:
1. News Item/Cultural Reference: Begin with a short rendering of either a news item or some aspect of popular culture (movie, song, video, etc.) that relates to main idea. Avoid long summaries and quotations. Do not mention the above poem here. (one paragraph)
2. Main Idea: Introduce the poem, including title and author. Comment on a line or two. (one paragraph)
3. Background:  Include some biographical information about the poet. (one paragraph)
4. Discussion: (several paragraphs)
Supply a paraphrase, including a synopsis.
Decide how the use of setting, diction, tone, and sound contribute to the poem’s meaning. (Not all of the above may apply; choose only those which are relevant.)
Comment on any relevant formal considerations.
Consider the speaker’s speech act.
Discuss the speaker and intended audience.
Consider the use of symbolism, imagery, and figures of speech.
Choose any four lines to illustrate the rhyme scheme, metric foot, and meter. Indicate stressed syllables with all caps and unstressed syllables with lower caser; separate by dashes. This paragraph should be centered and single-spaced.
5. Conclusion: Restate main idea. Leave the reader with something to think about.
(one paragraph)
