Volcanoes: Assessing the Risks
Complete the worksheet Volcanoes: Assessing the Risks, where you will research a legendary volcanic eruption.Module #9 Portfolio Element:
Students with last names that begin with “E-L” will investigate the volcano: Santorini,
Greece
For each location, answer the following questions:
1) Provide a description of the plate tectonic environment in which the volcano formed. Also,
discuss/describe another area on Earth where a similar plate tectonic environment exists.
2) A summary of the eruption including: date and time, cause(s) of the eruption, sequence of
events/hazards, area affected, fatalities, property damage, and type(s) of material (e.g., basaltic lava,
ash) erupted.
3) Describe current/recent activity. What is the likelihood that this activity will develop into a major
eruption?
The answers to these questions should be very simply stated – using words that
you understand, as if you were explaining to someone with limited understanding
in science. Do not copy your answers from your sources, instead write your
responses in YOUR OWN WORDS.
