Why is analysis important?
Analysis is a skill that you use every day in class, at work, and in other aspects of your life.
Analyzing a text helps you understand how the elements of a message work together to create meaning. Analyzing different types of texts shows different ways of creating meaning. As you become more comfortable identifying the rhetorical strategies others employ, you can more effectively utilize these strategies in your writing.
By looking at how various people present their positions on an issue, you will go beyond overly simplistic ideas about an issue to see the complexities involved. When dealing with any issue, the first crucial step is to try to listen with the intent to understand other peoples’ perspectives. This process allows us to make informed, thoughtful judgments and arguments of our own, and these are skills you will focus on and write about in ENGL 1302.
Issue-Based Rhetorical Analysis
Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to critically analyze various texts that represent various perspectives on an issue. The issue can be any controversy that matters to people, and that has multiple perspectives. The texts should be of various types (such as written texts, videos, podcasts, and images). The texts should present differing perspectives or ideas on the issue you’re exploring.
You will delve into the elements of each text, consider the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, explore the intended audience, and provide an in-depth analysis rhetoric. You will discuss how word choice, tone, examples, and evidence contribute to the overall effectiveness of the writing. The goal of this assignment is not only to analyze what the creator is arguing but how the creator is presenting the argument.
Any type of rhetorical analysis aims to demonstrate an understanding of how the piece communicates the message and meaning. In this assignment, you will analyze and provide insights into the persuasive strategies used in various texts.
