The response journal allows the students to reflect on the course lectures, discussions, readings, and multimedia materials. In this course, there is only one journal that reflects how you arrived at the class and the knowledge you have about the humanities, and the second one at the end of the semester reflects your journey in the course, the learning acquired, and the connections you make with your experiences and previous knowledge. This is not a summary of what we have covered in class. Instead, it is an opportunity for the student to reflect on their own work and learning while connecting with their previous knowledge using examples to illustrate their reflection.
The following questions can be used to guide you through your reflection writing process DO NOT ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. Instead, use them as a guide to understand what you can write about in your response journal.
1. How can you describe your learning experience so far in this class? Provide two examples and explain them.
2. Select a paragraph or quote from any of the readings that connected with any previous knowledge or personal experience. Explain the connection.
3. What have you learned from the videos included in the modules so far? Provide two examples and explain them.
4. Did you have any previous knowledge about what has been covered so far in the course? Have you gained more knowledge or opened your mind to another perspective about a specific subject? Provide one example and explain.
This assignment requires students to reflect on what has been covered in class in their own words, supported by using course materials cited following APA Style. Students must write a reflection of a 300-word (minimum) entry (one page, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font, please do not use any other font).
Two sources from the course are required to support the student’s reflection. Another two sources the student finds by researching the Dallas College Online Library Database must be included and cited following APA Style.
Points will be deducted if the assignment does not fulfill all the requirements stated in the syllabus. The reflection must reflect on what has been covered in class, the discussions during the course, and the student’s reflection on how what they have learned so far impacted them.
Entries must be reflective and personal, not simply descriptive. Reflections must not only be based on opinion. This is college, and any paper you write must support it with sources and cite the sources. Failure to document sources properly will be considered plagiarism, and the student may receive zero credit for the assignment and other possible consequences.
Each reflection must be uploaded to Brightspace as a PDF; no other format will be accepted. The due dates for each one of the response journals can be found on the syllabus and Brightspace.
No assignment will be accepted via email or Brightspace message.
The reflection is graded as follows: A paper reflecting the weekly student learning will earn all the points with a minimum of 300 words and college-level English expression. Students will be penalized one point for every one of the following:
1. A missing entry.
2. An entry that is too short. 3. An entry that is descriptive instead of reflective. 4. English expression that does not consistently meet college standards.
When quoting directly or indirectly from a text, use APA citation format. For complete guidelines, refer to the APA Style Resources available at Dallas College Online Library.
The due dates for each one of the reflections can be found on the syllabus and Brightspace.
The assignment submission box is open several days before the due date to allow students to work with enough time on their assignments before the due date.
Organize your time and avoid procrastination. After the due date, the reflection can be submitted up to two days after. However, five points will be deducted for each day late as a penalty.
No assignment will be accepted after two days after the due date, with no exceptions or exclusions. It’s the responsibility of the student to know the assignment due dates. Consult the assignment rubric before to familiarize yourself with the assignment so you know what you need to do and how to obtain the most points possible.
