The purpose of this assignment is to reflect upon the importance of “law” and “gospel”.
This Theological Essay #1 will focus on Chapter 3. Your essay should be between 750–800 words and single-spaced. Please be aware that for all written assignments in this course, you are expected to turn in your own original work as stated in the syllabus under Policy on Academic Honesty and Plagiarism.
Tasks
Read Chapters 1–3 in Called to Believe, A Brief Introduction to Christian Doctrine.
Respond to the prompt: Why is the proper distinction between Law and Gospel in the Word of God so important? How does God use these two themes of Scripture to lead us to and then actually give to us salvation?
It might help to think here of a practical situation. Imagine a patient who is feeling depressed because they feel that God is either punishing them or abandoning them in relation to their illness. The Law is weighing down on them. They feel as though they have failed in life or maybe that they have sinned irreparably. How might you apply the Gospel if this patient has opened a door and permitted you to share the Gospel with them?
