Why are annotated bibliographies used?
Annotated bibliographies (bibs) are the research used to complete your research essay. While some may believe that research is completed after an essay is written, the process actually takes place before writing ever begins. The annotated bibliography may be selective or comprehensive in its coverage. A selective annotated bibliography includes just the best items for the topic, while an exhaustive annotated bibliography attempts to identify all that is available on a subject. For our purposes, you will be creating a selective annotated bibliography. Remember that annotated bibs are always arranged in alphabetical order.
How do I complete the annotated bibliographies assignment?
The Introduction will be the first page of your annotated bibliography assignment. Students will introduce their research topic and their position for the essay. This introduction should be written in the third person and explore items such as original research questions and reasoning for the position. This should be no less than 3/4 of the page long. This page will be double-spaced with an MLA heading.
A bibliography is a list of sources (journals and other credible sources) that one considers using as research for their topic. A bibliography includes bibliographic information such as the author, title, publisher, and other information.
The annotation for each source is a summary of the critical essay and the identification of patterns or themes, drawn conclusions, irony, characterization, etc. The annotations are written in two paragraphs, with no quotes or parenthetical citations found within the body of the paragraph. Each annotation should be the length of at least half a page.
Paragraph one will summarize the source. This paragraph highlights the position taken for the essay and the proofs mentioned in the work. They offer a conclusion of the source, yet they do not evaluate the work.
Paragraph two will evaluate the scholarly source. When writing, you will assess the strengths and weaknesses of the source that presents usefulness and quality. This goes beyond summarizing the work. The paragraph gives a critical evaluation of the author or source and tries to understand what the author reveals or why critics study the work. Is there a significant similarity/contrast between this analysis and others? It assists in explaining how the research document aids in your research project. In the end, it justifies your use of this source within your research essay.
Annotated bibliographies are always listed in alphabetical order. For this assignment, the citation will be double-spaced, and the annotation (paragraphs one and two) will be single-spaced.
What are the requirements for the annotated bibliographies assignment?
MLA Format (Times New Roman, 12-pt font); one-inch margin used for formatting each page. There will be an automatic twenty-point deduction for manipulated margins or spacing. For this assignment, the citation will be double-spaced, but paragraphs one and two will be single-spaced.
Eight scholarly journals – Can be found using the UHV/VC Library or Google Scholar.
Two credible sources (.gov/.edu) Students who do not want to use online sources can use a total of ten scholarly journals. How will I be graded?
Each annotated bibliography is worth 10 pts. If a student fails to complete all ten entries in their entirety, an automatic zero will be assigned. The entry format is shown below.
Entry Example:
Applequist, Janelle, and Jennifer Gerard Ball. “An Updated Analysis of Direct-to-Consumer Television Advertisements for Prescription Drugs.”
Annals of Family Medicine, vol. 16, no. 3, May 2018, pp. 211–16. EBSCOhost, https://doi-org.ruby.uhv.edu/10.1370/afm.2220.
In recent years, pharmaceutical companies have spent billions of dollars on direct-to-consumer advertising. The majority of DTCA consists of television advertisements. These commercials can influence patients medically rather than educationally. Drug ads must follow specific guidelines, and provide correct information about the risks, benefits, and side effects of taking the medication. There are three distinct types of pharmaceutical product advertisements, but this research only examined product claim ads. Current drug advertising often portrays patients with chronic illnesses as having a “normal life” when prescribed the medication. The initial purpose of current drug ads is to promote a product rather than further educate patients. This study’s purpose is to encourage further research on how prescription drug advertisements directly affect the public.
Dr. Applequist has a Ph.D. in Advertising and Mass Communications and is the author of two books regarding the topic of pharmaceutical companies and health care. Dr. Ball has a Ph.D. in Media and Communication, and her research interests include direct-to-consumer advertising and health communication. Both the author’s research and academic publication can be considered credible. The research conducted proves pharmaceutical advertisements are meant to promote rather than inform. The authors provide the audience with visual tables demonstrating product-claim advertisements and their contents in 2004 and in 2016. The evidence can be used to support the idea pharmaceutical companies prioritize receiving profit rather than aiding patients’ health when investing in advertisements. The article extensively explains how direct-to-consumer ads can affect patients negatively, therefore demonstrating pharmaceutical companies’ lack of concern for the public’s health.
