The most important assignment of the semester is the final paper. It is worth up to 40 points
toward your final score in the course. It includes a proposal, research plan, outline, and
approximately 2,000-word (8-page) final paper submitted by midnight on Sunday, June 30th.
You will need to submit: 1) a brief paragraph describing your topic; and, 2) a working thesis
statement and a brief outline of your paper as posted in the schedule.
Papers must be typed and double-spaced, with standard one-inch margins and 12-point font.
Paper topic is a formal analysis identifying the theme and showing examples of the director
using “formal” elements (e.g., camera angles, lighting, color, sound, editing) to bring out that
theme. Papers are evaluated in terms of their responsiveness to the assignment and to the
material presented in class and in the readings, the logical coherence of their arguments, their
quality of organization, their rhetorical sophistication, as well as their adherence to grammatical
conventions.
