The analytical essay as an expanded version of the précis papers(attached), so the focus of the essay is that author/article. Note the structure that the essay should follow in the linked document provided in the syllabus. Your précis will form the basis of the “summary” section of the analytical essay, but for a couple reasons it wouldn’t be a good idea just to copy and paste it into the summary section of your analytical essay and leave it at that. For starters, your précis may be too broad and general to serve up an appropriate target of analysis and criticism/evaluation. The point of the “summary” section is to more narrowly focus on a part of the author’s argument that you want to subject to some analytical scrutiny in the “critique” section. Which part? That’s up to you, but it should be clearly outlined in your introduction and thesis statement.
When you establish your focus from the author/article, you will most likely find that you’ve covered only part of that in your initial précis, and so you will need to expand on your explanation of the relevant part of the argument in the final version of your “summary” section.
In the “critique” or evaluation section you will develop your point of view concerning the author’s argument presented in the “summary” section. You can mount a counter-argument to it, perhaps based on your development of an argument in another of the course readings. Or, you may present potential objections to it and then go on to develop a response on behalf of the author/article you picked. Again, other course readings, lectures, some of the back-and-forth in the discussion forum assignments should all be helpful in thinking about how you want to develop and defend your analysis/argument/point of view.
It should have brief “Introduction” that ends with a clear, direct and specific statement of your thesis. Present and elaborate the argument of the target reading, explaining how it is supposed to work in the “Summary” section. You will be drawing on the précis you selected here. Evaluate the success that argument, developing your own argument that undermines or defends it, in the “Critique” section. Try to think of the summary section as setting out the key argument you are targeting in your thesis. It’s the argument you will analyze or evaluate in the “Critique” section of the essay. The summary should be focused on only that which is relevant to your analysis and evaluation.
