Sculpture in Context
We will be learning about the various uses of sculpture. The sculpture that we see in museums has been taken out of its original context – it may have been intended for a church or temple, for a burial site, for a public square, etc.  Your assignment is to find a local example of sculpture still in the place for which it was created (in situ).  It could be in a cemetery, a public space such as a town common, the lobby of an office building, on or near a government building, etc.  It must be something you can see in person for this assignment.  Please include a cell phone photograph.  If necessary, you can choose to do the assignment online.
In a brief essay of no more than 500 words, fully identify your choice, describe the composition, its medium, where it is, and discuss what its use is – is it funerary, religious, purely decorative, commemorative, etc.  Finally, in your opinion, is it successful?  If so, why?  If not, why not?
