Samantha is a 28-year-old college student who is about 4 months pregnant. She has a history of cardiac disease that has worsened because of the pregnancy. Samantha’s doctor is concerned that continuing the pregnancy can cause her heart condition to worsen and could result in a life-threatening emergency. He has recommended termination of the pregnancy within the next two weeks. Samantha is reluctant, stating that, although she does not currently go to church, she was raised to believe abortion is wrong and believes God will heal her. She wants to know what the nurse would do in her position. The nurse does not believe in abortion under any circumstance. Should these personal beliefs be considered when speaking with this patient?
