Then choose only one of the images below to analyze after taking the
time to contemplate the image.  Think about what you see in terms of
subject matter, look for recognizable compositional qualities, and
contemplate the contextual meaning which is subjective or based on your
opinion.
Please provide an authentic analysis or reading of your choice using the tools learned in the How to Read an Photographic Image
essay.  Do not perform outside research on the photo.  It should be a
cold reading, which means you should not look for information on the
photograph on the Internet.
How to analyze a photo?  Again, read the essay above to learn the
tools and then write a few sentences for each of the three items below:
Discuss the content or subject matter of the work (discuss what you see in the photo)
Discuss the formal compositional elements such as form, light and
dark contrasts, line, color, angle, clarity, blur, texture, patterns,
etc.
Discuss the context or meaning of the work (there are no right or wrong answers as meaning is personal and subjective)
Please do not try to figure out the photographer’s name or the title
of the work or cultural/social aspects surrounding the work.  If you
have seen the photo before, pick one you are not familiar with to
complete this assignment.  AGAIN do not perform outside research!  If
you are asking yourself why does this instructor keep reiterating this
point, it is because too many students either have little faith in their
analysis abilities so they seek outside help or have not read the essay
that teaches one what to look for when analyzing an image.
