First, tell me who the main characters are (their names)? Who do you like (and why)? Where are we in time and place? What do you know personally about that era and about what life was like? At the end of Chapter 3, Butch says he and his brother got a job. Is it clear what they will be doing (notice the Girl does not bring up the fact that there is a strike)? In Chapter 5, it is Sunday, the day before the job starts. How is that day characterized in the chapter? What exactly are Butch and Bill going to be doing? You might need to look up what is meant by a “wildcat” strike and what a “scab” is in slang related to workers’ unions. What happens on Monday?
What are your thoughts (so far) on the position of women in this novel in relation to the men? What seems to characterize the differences between the two genders?
