The system of race based slavery was invented before the Revolution and sustained after the Revolution because it personally benefited the elites at the top. When revolts by lower class white males would happen, the government would allow them to settle in frontier areas, thereby easing the social and economic pressures in the settled areas (as famously argued in Turner’s Frontier Thesis).
