Please read the short essay by artist Sol Lewitt Paragraphs on Conceptual Art , published in Artforum (an monthly contemporary art magazine still around today) in 1967.
This week we will be looking at some early object-based and performative conceptual art works. Your journal this week asks you to respond to Yoko Ono’s Grapefruit, which is a seminal piece of conceptual art and a collection of “event scores” written by Ono.
Details:
Respond to excerpts from Yoko Ono’s Grapefruit. Choose at least 3 of the event scores (instructions) and discuss what concepts do these pieces ask us to consider? How do they play with language, performance, observation, reality, etc. How does the nature of playfulness and open interpretation challenge our ideas of a prescriptive system of art-making and experiencing art? Be sure to include specifics of the art pieces mentioned.
If you can, describe how you may actually create and execute the piece.
