The Public health interventions wheel encompasses a broad range of interventions that include case-finding, individual focused, community focused and systems focused. I am going to discuss outreach and screening in the community focused interventions. Public health nursing is based on population needs. This maybe for a group of people in the same geographical area or a group of people who share certain characteristics or risk factors. Using outreach as an intervention the nurse will designate a population of interest. For example the nurse identifies that younger people are at risk for obesity. Using the outreach intervention she can provide information such as healthy lifestyle activities that can help prevent obesity. She will also identify access to services such as food access and exercise access for the community. During the screening intervention she can screen this population for high blood pressure which is a risk for anyone who is obese. These interventions can be applied to almost any situation in public health; from vaccines, yearly checkups and education on communicable diseases. I cannot think of a more recent time then during the COVID-19 pandemic that public health nursing and outreach and screening were so widely used. Being able to get the COVID-19 vaccine out and available to the public and using that data to prioritize and plan where vaccines needed to be distributed was a massive undertaking and used the principles of the public health interventions wheel (Werling et.al. , 2021).
