The purpose of basic training seems to be to eliminate the innate individuality to teach a mindset of believing that fellow service members are one.  
In preparation for the discussion, consider the course materials for the week addressing the soldier’s moral values of LDRSHIP (loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage).
