Main Learning Objective: Explain the way Judaism, Christianity, and Islam appeal to the figure of Abraham
Secondary Learning Objectives:
Practice reading controversial arguments for understanding
Defend with argument and reason a particular take on Abraham and the monothesitic religions
Articulate a position using standard English, paragraph divisions, proper grammar, and clear expressions.
In this week’s reading, you encountered at least three different perspectives on the contemporary significance of Abraham for the three monotheistic faiths.
Some interpret Abraham as a potential source of unity (e.g, Bruce Feiler).
Some interpret Abraham as a symbol that specific groups use for ideological purposes which need to be investigated by historians who should not take sides (e.g., Aaron Hughes).
Some appeal to Abraham as a forefather of one religion over the others (this is roughly Timothy George’s approach, though note that he does not actually appeal to Abraham in his article).
For your essay, choose one of these approaches as superior to the other two and present an argument for it. Give reasons that your chosen perspective is the most compelling option, but also evaluate the shortcomings of the other two: do they have any strengths, or are there reasons for their popularity?
Your essay must include two explicit references to the texts with page numbers in parentheses (these may or may not be quotations–that is up to you).
