Like all living things, humans are subject to the forces of evolution. Think about the mechanisms of evolution outlined in this week’s reading (particularly mutation, genetic drift, and natural selection). What is an example of a human trait that might be explained by one (or more) of these mechanisms? For example, one trait that can be explained by the evolutionary force of mutation is Tay-Sachs disease, a fatal simple autosomal disorder. In your post, be sure to describe the trait and the mechanism(s) at work and incorporate research to support your claim. Keep in mind that any trait you propose must have a genetic component for the forces of evolution to act on it.
Respond to at least two of your classmates. Consider the traits they chose and the explanatory mechanisms. Do you agree with their arguments? Why or why not? Are there other mechanisms of evolution that might also be useful in explaining the evolution of their selected trait?
