What aspects of this week’s lecture invoked a response (revelation, anger, frustration, sadness, fear, inspiration, etc) in you? Please reflect intellectually and personally, but you’ll also need to integrate 2 peer-reviewed academic research articles into your analysis (cited in proper APA format).
Some essential topics you’ll want to think about and reflect on:
Is it nature or nurture? Are people born aggressive or is aggression learned through experience? The answer is multifaceted – it is undeniably both.
What role do biology, genes, hormones, brain chemistry play in aggression?
What is testosterone and what role does it play in aggression?
How do hierarchy, social status, relative deprivation, and stress influence aggression?
How does the media we consume socialize us to aggression?
What are the messages men receive about what it means to be a “real man?” How does this hypermasculine culture relate to aggression?
How do video games, violent movies, and pornography influence our social scripts and understandings of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors? From sexually explicit media (porn) to violent video games, the links to aggression are observable across numerous studies. How do you make sense of this research? Consider Self-determination theory.
Are we more aggressive today than in the past?
What can we do to decrease aggression?
Be sure to engage specifically with the presented content in this module when analyzing these questions. Use names of authors/speakers when you’re analyzing their work, but you do not need to cite youtube videos in your paper. I only expect your reference page to include the 2 academic peer-reviewed journal articles you’ve integrated findings from.
