Prompt
After viewing and reading the materials for the first few weeks, you will discuss the ways in which Black folks created conditions for themselves during slavery and the early 20th century. Conversations around Black History often focus on the trauma, and validly so sometimes, but another important aspect of slavery and the following several decades is the lives, families, culture, language, dance, religion, and revolutionary action of Black folks during these times. Frame your essay around the idea of “Black agency” and the ways in which Black folks were able to historically act and create conditions for themselves. Think about how Black folks built “Black Wall Street” in Tulsa for example. Pay particular attention to themes of culture, identity, language, music, and resistance.
