Final Exam Essay Question
Having read M. Butterfly and A Doll’s House, you have seen some patterns and connections emerge in the action of the plays and in the characters who embody the action. For this last assignment in the course, write a clear, focused essay that compares and contrasts a major theme from both plays with the purpose of showing how the two plays give an idea substance.
For example, while you can find the idea of deceiving someone for personal gain or safety in both plays, the tenor of the idea is very different between the two. Gallimard hardly seems oppressed, but Nora does seem so, and just that difference gives us various ways to consider the idea of deceit in the plays. After defining the theme you see shared between the plays (the Discussions make a good reference for these), notice what they plays have in common and then emphasize their differences and the meaning of those differences.
