Does Modernization Entail Democratization? ‘Case Study ‘EU vs see prompt….’
Dear Students:
Through qualitative research you are asked to evaluate the evolution of ‘democracy’ and ‘liberal democracies’ as well as ‘modern -advanced democracies’. Think about the cases of the UK, France, US and even Japan how they have evolved into Democracies and what kind? Please compare the EU as a hybrid democratic organization of nation states with one nation that is mentioned above. Then conclude with a main argument through your research by supporting either pro or against your position on the DQ: ‘Does Modernization Entail Democratization?’
Mission: After Reading from ebooks and appropriate Links under Modules II; please evaluate and define the institutional principles of these two nations as they developed as nation-states. Through your own critical and comprehensive analysis you can make a comparison and detect the similarities and differences that these two nations have in their past institutions and how they derived as strong states.
Guidelines to Consider for your Research:
Identify these nations (EU and Japan, or France, US, UK ) based on their historical governmental development and principles if they are nation-states, state, or just a nation.
Identify the key factors defining these two nations or states as strong and modern democracies.
Is
modernization equivalent to westernization? Why is westernization likely to be controversial in much of the world?
Where there ever authoritarian, weak, or failed nation-states before they became modern democracies?
Rulers resisting colonial incursions often failed to do so successfully. What might be some of the primary factors accounting for this failure? How could Japan manage to resist successfully?
Colonial policy created a modern imperial core and a periphery that served the economic interest of the core imperial states. Has this survived today? In what way?
