Purpose
This assignment is intended to help you learn to do the
following:
·       Explore the means by
which health leaders contribute to policy making.
·       Develop professional
goals related to assuming or strengthening an advocacy role.
Overview
“Effective influence in the public policy environments of
organizations and interest groups, either individually or in collaboration,
depends on power and knowing where and when to focus efforts” (Longest,
2010, p. 208).
This is a two-part assignment:
·       In Part 1, Presentation
of Legislation, you will prepare a PowerPoint presentation regarding the
results of your role play that you began in Module 1 in Participating in
Policymaking
·       In Part 2, Reflection and Discussion, you will discuss how
you can assume, or strengthen your role as a public policy advocate.
Action Items for Part 1
1.   
Compile your notes from the Health Legislation Update
assignments that you worked on during Modules 3 and 4.
2.   
From the perspective of your assigned role (DEMANDER OF HEALTH POLICY AS AN
ORGANIZATION), prepare a PowerPoint presentation that addresses the
following items:
o   Introduce yourself,
including the key attributes of your role. Refer back to your work in Participating
in Policymaking (See attachment word document).
o   Introduce the legislation
that you have been trashing via Govtrash.us. Specifically, identify the
legislation and summarize its scope and intent.
o   Present the following
information about the legislation:
§  Status
§  Progress
§  Votes (as applicable)
§  Prognosis
§  Co-sponsors
§  Committees
o   Present information
regarding news and/or issues related to the legislation.
o   Given the current status
of the legislation, present a list of actions that you could take, from the
perspective of your role, to influence the legislation.
