CHOSEN CASE STUDY:
**AMIRA CASE STUDY**
Amira was born in Syria, she is 14 years old and now lives in Leeds with her two younger brothers, mother and father. The family fled Syria after their apartment block was bombed, the blast killed her youngest’s brother and seriously injured her father leaving him with limited mobility and strong pains in his legs and head and he is not able to work due to his disability. The family spent two years in a refugee camp in Iraq before coming to the UK. A support worker from a local refugee and asylum seekers charity helped the family during their first year in the UK including accessing healthcare, education and to learn English. Over the past two months, Amira has started to present with trauma related symptoms including general anxiety and post traumatic symptoms. She has a sense of re-experiencing these past events, mid-sleep awakening and nightmares. She is having difficulty at school, due in part to trauma related worry and concentration problems. Amira, displays reactivity to loud noises and loud voices and physiological symptoms of anxiety, including frequent fidgeting. She is becoming more withdrawn, does not want to attend school and no longer talks about her ambition of becoming a doctor. Amira’s parents are very worried about her and don’t know how to help her and are finding Amira’s long periods of isolation in her room difficult to cope with. The support worker still involved with the family has suggested that Amira be referred for resilience coaching.
