Chapters 3&4
A self-fulfilling prophecy occurs when an individual “A” has a preconceived expectation about another person “B”. Individual “A” reacts to person “B” accordingly. This, in turn, causes person “B” to act in a way consistent with the original expectation. This week’s discussion will examine schemas and self-fulfilling prophecies. Post answers to the following prompts in the appropriate Discussion topic:
* Define schema in your own words.  Do you think schemas influence how events are interpreted?
* Reflect on the replies of peers and share insights on how your notion of schemas compares to theirs in your response to them.
* Define self-fulfilling prophecy in your own words.  How might it relate to an individual’s schema?
* Discuss any new insights you have with classmates.
* Provide an example (either from personal experience or one you create – but not the one from the text!).
