Background: The California Q-Sort is a 100-item Q-sort instrument that allows a knowledgeable rater to rate a particular person using a wide range of emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social characteristics.
Instructions: Read over the 100 items of the California Q-Set and select five items that are extremely characteristic of you and five items that are extremely uncharacteristic of you (10 items in total). You do not need to share the 10 items that you chose, but you are welcome to.
Create a document ( PDF) in which you reflect on the following questions (assume that you need to write at MINIMUM 2-3 sentences for each response, some questions will require responses that are longer than that!)
How difficult was it to narrow the choices down and find five items that you could put in each of these extreme categories?
Why might it be more effective to use this sorting system rather than having people rate each item individually on a 7-point scale (i.e., rating “I am a talkative person” on a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree)?
What would it be like to assess someone you have known for several years using this approach (i.e., in what ways would it be especially useful or challenging?)
What concerns would you have about someone else using this approach to assess you?
