After the 2020 presidential elections, there were protests going on around the country claiming that the election was stolen and Donald Trump is the rightful president. These protests turned violent on January 6th as protestors stormed the Capitol Building and 6 people ended up dying. There were also numerous protests in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Clearly these protests are political. Protests have a long history in American politics going back to the founding of the country with acts such as the Boston Tea Party. Do you believe that protests (any protest) as a form of political participation are legitimate or should participants be fined and jailed? Why do people participate in protests instead of just voting? From what you have learned in the Public Meeting and American Violet movie, what are some other ways to participate in the political system and might they be more effective?
