After choosing one of the topics below and your subjects, use prewriting strategies (freewriting, brainstorming, outlining) to generate concrete details and ideas about your subjects.
Next, decide what is significant about the similarities and/or differences of your subjects and come up with a working thesis statement; keep tweaking this thesis to make it stronger and more interesting as you go. Decide if you will use the point-by-point or block pattern of organization and create an outline to help focus your essay. Remember, a strong essay will rely on specific detail and good paragraphing. PURPOSE: Your thesis and essay should reflect why the ideal is preferable to the reality (or why the reality is preferable to the ideal) and your body paragraphs should incorporate lots of concrete descriptions and explanations to support your argument.
ESSAY LENGTH: 2 1/2 to 3 pages (Times New Roman 12pt)
