Abstract
Rapid economic, social, and
technological changes affecting the entire world have not spared universities,
which are under increasing pressure from students and their parents who are
demanding more value for money. Furthermore, international competition among
universities is picking up steam. As a result, many universities around the
world are experimenting with and adopting new technologies in order to gain more
customers and funds. Many Ethiopian universities are well-known around the
world as prestigious research institutions. However, if they remain idle, their
prestigious positions are likely to dwindle over time. The topic of innovation
has received a lot of attention in recent years, as some innovative companies
have achieved quite remarkable results by manufacturing innovative products and
providing innovative services. Little emphasis has been placed on innovation
and how universities can capitalize on it. One possible explanation for the
failure to do so is that many universities were enjoying their usual stream of
students and government funding. However, this is changing as a result of
increased tuition fees, and recent governmental policies have resulted in
further funding cuts. Employee well-being and the work environment are two
important factors that are almost always linked to innovation. However, as this
study shows, there are numerous pressures placed on members of staff in
Ethiopian universities. As a result, unless these pressures and issues are
addressed, it is unlikely that any innovation will occur.
