·       Lesch & Haas – The Middle
East & the United States – Chapters 4, 5-10, and 13.
Discussion 1
Throughout much of the contemporary period discussed in these
readings, America has perceived its power and influence in the Middle East to
decline, and Americans have consistently elected presidents promising
disengagement from the region. However, at the same time, America remains the
preeminent power in the region and remains profoundly and consistently engaged
there. How do you explain this dichotomy? How, if at all, do you think it will
eventually be resolved?
Discussion 2
Assess Abrams’s arguments in Realism and Democracy. Do you
agree with him that democracy promotion, while complex and sometimes highly
problematic in the short term, is essential to the success of U.S. foreign
policy in the long term? Why or why not?
